View the latest connected devices at the Eastern Panhandle Home Builder’s Association Home Show

MARTINBURG, W.Va. – With Amazon Key making in-home deliveries possible while homeowners are away, and digital assistants controlling everything from a home’s temperature to its surround sound, there is no question the futuristic home depicted in The Jetsons back in the 1960’s has arrived. As smart home technology continues to evolve, there are many affordable connected devices that are popular among West Virginia smartphone users seeking to make their homes and lives safer, more comfortable and considerably more convenient. West Virginians can come to the Eastern Panhandle Home Builder’s Association Home Show located at Berkeley Plaza, 215 Monroe St. in Martinsburg on Sat., March 24, from 10 am-7 pm and Sun. and March 25 from 10 am-4 pm to view the latest smart home trends in action at the U.S. Cellular booth located at G7.

“We’ve been seeing smart homes portrayed on TV for decades, but now these innovations are a reality for consumers in both urban and rural communities served by our high-quality nationwide network,” said Nathan Waddell, U.S. Cellular’s director of sales in the Mid-South. “A recent U.S. Cellular survey indicates 30 percent of smartphone users are now regularly using smart home technology1. Consumers are not only utilizing accessories such as Nest Cam and Ring Video Doorbells for security, but also leveraging smart thermostats and lighting for their family’s comfort. Devices like these are conveniently managed via voice-activated smart speakers or from their iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S9.” Over a quarter of smartphone users say they use their device daily to control their home security systems, manage energy usage or otherwise connect to their homes and nearly 50 percent are utilizing this technology once a month or more1. Here are some of the smartphone-compatible connected home devices that will be in demand this year: Google Home – This voice-controlled home speaker, and the more compact Google Home Mini, are more than just tools to stream music. They serve as the control hub to remotely manage other accessories that control a home’s temperature and lighting. Both can do quick calculations or recipe conversions, read text messages out loud, schedule calendar events, set alarms and check traffic or weather conditions. They can even distinguish between different voices within the household for a more personalized experience. The Amazon Echo offers similar features. Motorola Orbit Camera – This battery operated, wire-free home security system can be set up inside and/or outside the home and monitored via Wi-Fi on multiple devices. The camera features full HD (1080p) video streaming that puts homeowners at ease while they are away and works during the day and night, thanks to its infrared night vision. It can send sound, motion and room temperature notifications, allows for two-way communication with family and pets and includes 24-hour recorded video history. Ring Video Doorbell 2 – This doorbell upgrade is another popular product that allows homeowners to see, hear and speak to anyone at their front door. It can be connected to a Samsung Galaxy S8 or other smartphone, tablet or PC and managed while users are away from home or relaxing inside. Philips Hue White Starter Kit – This home lighting system provides homeowners with remote lighting control, as well as scheduling and dimming options from compatible devices while away from home or when in the same room. The dimming feature is particularly helpful for those seeking a consistent way to transition young kids from evening play to bedtime. In addition, a demo of the Nest Learning Thermostat will be on display at the show. These items currently range in price from $30 to approximately $200 and are available at U.S. Cellular stores or on uscellular.com. Many insurance companies have also begun offering discounts to homeowners utilizing devices such as the Samsung SmartThings Water Leak Sensor, which notifies users if a water leak is detected.
