The Apollo Civic Theatre presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Martinsburg, WV: The Apollo Civic Theatre stages William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Directed by Caitlin Cutright, Midsummer follows four young Athenians, who run into the enchanted forest, in hopes of marrying their true loves. Their plan goes awry when mischievous fairies cast a spell over them. After a confusion-filled night, the fairies release the mortals from their charm and the couples, now happily married, celebrate with the Duke and his new bride.

Using traditional Shakespearean staging conditions, Cutright has utilized the entire auditorium as a stage. Cutright shares the inspiration behind her staging, “Shakespeare wanted his plays to be versatile. The plays could be performed inside, outside, and even on tour, so I kept my set mobile. During the performance, the house lights stay up to utilize the entire theater. Shakespeare’s actors wore modern clothing, even if the play took place in another time period. I kept Shakespeare’s tradition of using contemporary clothing. This gives the audience a more authentic Shakespearean experience.”

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most accessible shows. “In addition to being full of magic and sword fights, because who doesn’t love those things,” Ryan Perry, the production’s Assistant Stage Manager shares, “this show is filled with relatable comedy. We all know the feeling of unrequited love or know what it is like to act like a goofball with your friends and this show highlights all of these emotions and more.”
