Shepherdstown’s 6th Annual “Dogfest” Set For April 28-29
Shepherdstown WV will hold its sixth annual “DogFest” the weekend of April 29-30.
The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00-4:00pm on Sunday. It will include a wide variety of activities for dogs, their owners, dog lovers, and the general public. The activities will be located on King Street, downtown, and adjacent grounds of Shepherd University. All the activities will be free and everyone will be welcome.
As always, the event will bring together all-breed rescue organizations, dog shelters, and breed-specific rescues drawn from five states and Washington, D.C. Many of those organizations will bring adoptable dogs with them. Visitors will be encouraged to meet the dogs, and to learn about their personalities, their grooming and other needs, and the process of adoption.
Saturday’s schedule will be preceded by pre-fest Fun Runs of one mile for children and their dogs and two miles for adults and dogs, sponsored by local running store Two Rivers Treads. These runs will start at 9:00 a.m. As part of the runs, a small obstacle course will be installed in the exhibit area and left there throughout Saturday for a do-it-yourself agility course for visitors and exhibitors alike.
Sunday will feature sheep dog demonstrations, in which these highly intelligent dogs will display their skills at herding sheep. Sunday’s schedule will also include an afternoon community dog show open to all dogs.
Both days will include blessings of the dogs; exhibits and demonstrations by trainers, rescue organizations, and others. For the first time, Paws of Honor, a non-profit organization that provides medical care for retired law-enforcement dogs, will participate. Greensburg Bed and Biscuit will conduct free behavioral and obedience clinics for those seeking this kind of assistance. Dog-centered vendors will be on hand offering products and services from healthful treats to pet photography.
Throughout the weekend, many restaurants and stores will let dog owners bring their dogs inside.
DogFest is sponsored by the Shepherdstown Visitors Center; watch the Center’s website at http://www.shepherdstown.info for schedule details.
