Newcomer House Porch Program Scheduled for July 1, 2017 – Civil War Singer/Storyteller Matthew Dodd
As part of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area’s (HCWHA) 2017 Porch Program Series, singer and storyteller Matthew Dodd will entertain visitors on Saturday, July 1, from 11:30 am – 4:30 pm on the porch of the Newcomer House on the Antietam National Battlefield; the same day as the park’s Salute to Independence.
Dressed in period soldier’s clothing, Matthew Dodd takes listeners back in time to feel what it was like to be a soldier, civilian, loved-one-at-home or escaped slave in the Civil War Era. Through period songs, excerpts from actual letters, and anecdotes (humorous and poignant) Matthew evokes the feelings and passions of that pivotal era of American history.
This is the second season of Porch Programs at the Newcomer House, HCWHA’s Exhibit & Visitor Center at Antietam National Battlefield. Visitors of all ages are invited to interact with experts on a variety of Civil War topics, ranging from first aid to family history. Exact times and other details will be posted on the Heart of the Civil War calendar of events, heartofthecivilwar.org/events.
