New Art Classes Added at the Berkeley Art Works

The Berkeley Arts Council invites neighbors from teens to seniors to rediscover the satisfaction of creating with your hands, eyes and imagination. Learn media and techniques or use those you may know, or use materials that catch your fancy. The varied programs range from basic techniques to methods that build skills with materials and design concepts.

Adding to an ongoing schedule taught by Judith Becker, new teaching artists offer an expanded schedule for Spring. Lori Thompson offers Visual Journaling and Beginning Book Making. Robert Howard teaches Beginning Portraiture and Expressions in Mixed Media. Victoria Pendragon will teach The Art of Collage.

All classes include 12 hours of instruction and guided practice by professional instructors. The fee is $90. There’s a class every day but Monday; Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening provide more flexible choice for the “day-job” crowd. Full descriptions, instructor bios and online registration are available by visiting

Becker is currently teaching Next Level Watercolor Painting, covering techniques to create transparency, luminosity and strong composition. (Saturdays, March 17 for four weeks.) She’ll add Beginning Watercolor Pencil on Thursday, April 12, and color theory on April 13.

The schedule of new offerings begins with Visual Journaling, an evening class starting April 12.  Beginning Portraiture is offered Sunday from 1-4 pm on April 15; Art of Collage starts Tuesday, April 17 at noon, with Friday presenting Expressions in Mixed Media.

Now through March 24
Youth Art Month
Berkeley County High School Art Exhibit

Youth Art Month is happening now at the Berkeley Art Works, continuing through March 24. Parents and friends can visit during regular gallery hours Wednesday through Saturday. A big thanks goes to our high school art instructors who–as teachers do–went the extra mile to cope with unpredictable schedules and building access challenges to curate, prepare and install this showcase of artistic talent! Celebrate our young artists with us at the reception on Friday, March 16 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. It’s free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Wed-Fri 11-5, Sat 11-4.
