MDIFF-H Announces Closing Night Film and Festivities

Hagerstown, MD — On Saturday, May 3, the Maryland International Film Festival-Hagerstown, (MDIFF-H) will begin the evening entertainment at 7:00pm at the Academy Theater with the screening of “Backseat”. Festival Vice President, Tracie Hovey said, “We have such a wide variety of films to screen this year. We have something for everyone and this closing night film is a great way to end with some fun!”

“Backseat” is a full length feature coming of age story about high school love, punk rock, and hemorrhoids. High school social outcasts Roy Offerman and Larry DiMarco struggle to find a drummer for their new punk rock band, Witness My Jehovah. As Roy will learn, sometimes finding the answer to one problem only brings about a host of others. Immediately after finding a drummer, Roy is plagued by a raging case of hemorrhoids. This causes his parents to be confused about his sexuality, and starts up all sorts of new rumors at school. In the most unexpected place, Roy meets his dream girl Samantha. As Roy and Sam’s relationship develops, Witness My Jehovah lands their first big gig at a local music venue. When things don’t go as planned, Roy is faced with some of the biggest decisions he’ll ever have to make.

After the feature film’s screening, the MDIFF-H board will announce the winners of the festival for Best Student, Best Animation, Best Short, Best Documentary, and Best Feature. Board of Directors’ President Tom Riford said, “The festival brings filmmakers from around the world to Hagerstown, and we are very pleased to support them and their creativity. The amount of work that goes into each film is amazing, and the fact that these independent film-makers create entire movies on a limited budget is mind-boggling. Who knows we might just be witnessing the next Hollywood A-list celebrity or director before they make it big.”

MDIFF-H 2013 is scheduled to run over three days and will screen over 60 films from around the globe. All screenings will take place downtown Hagerstown. The screening will be held at the Maryland Theatre, Bridge of Life, and Academy Theater from May 1-3, 2014.
