24-Hours Theaterfest at Black Box Arts Center
Local artists get ready for the most unique theater event of the year!
“It’s really everything we love about the theater, crammed into 24 hours. It’s challenging, it’s wild and crazy, it’s exciting, and we all love it. What’s best is we’ve seen some amazing work come out of these festivals.” ~ Laura Richards Bakin, Artistic and Managing Director
The Black Box Arts Center is excited to announce the countdown to its unique celebration of new plays and excitement of the arts: 24-Hour Theaterfest. In this one-of-a-kind theater festival, teams of directors and playwrights meet a group of interested actors on a Friday at 7:00 p.m. The actors are auditioned. After they’ve left for the evening, the playwrights and directors divide the actors into groups, and plays are conceived and written just for them. In the morning, everyone returns and the rehearsal begins. Technical aspects are added throughout the day, as the teams craft three brand-new one-act plays for an arts-loving audience to be performed at 7:00 p.m. that Saturday evening.
Admission is pay-what-you-can, with all proceeds going to offset costs of future productions at the non-profit arts center. All audience members are welcome to attend an after-show reception.
“Like most theatre folks, I try to minimize chaos when involved in a show. I succeed only about half the time. But with the festival, we embraced the chaos and the hurried nature. Adrenaline of an entirely different nature runs through everyone involved in the process, and the chaos, the loudly ticking mental clock adds to the adventure.” ~ Ty Unglebower, playwright, and actor
