Hike Gathland State Park to Harpers Ferry & Meeting Announcement

Hike Gathland State Park (MD) to Harpers Ferry on the Appalachian Trail
Meet 9 am, Sunday, May 20
Old Shipley School Parking Lot
850 Fillmore Street (near ATC), Harpers Ferry

Join Sierra Club-Eastern Panhandle for this 11-mile hike that includes rolling terrain on South Mountain, a dramatic river overlook at Weverton Cliff, descending switchbacks to the C&O Canal, a flat walk along the canal to Harpers Ferry and a walk up in town on city sidewalk. Most of the 900-foot elevation gain occurs at the end in town. Be prepared for stretches of very rough and rocky trail. Open to all adults and minors (with adult supervision or permission) of adequate fitness level for a lengthy hike on occasionally very rugged trail.

Park regulations limit us to 25 attendees, with preference given to those who have reserved.

Bring water, a bagged lunch, and snack if desired. Wear footwear and clothing appropriate to the terrain and weather. We will carry on in light rain but cancel if heavy precipitation. This will be the first in a series of hikes covering the entire AT in MD/WV. Some drivers will be needed for the car shuttle from the meeting place in Upper Town of Harpers Ferry to the hike start.
